Description: Photographs and other works of art by UNL students, faculty, and staff that reflect their definitions of sisterhood and celebrate their sisters.

Leadership Luncheon: “The Media and Women’s Health: Sorting Fact from Fiction”

Speaker: Judy Norsigian, editor of Our Bodies, Ourselves.
Summary: Four decades ago a small group of women in Boston decided that it was time for women to take back control of their healthcare, their treatment options, and their bodies. They produced the classic book Our Bodies, Ourselves. Norsigian, a member of that group and now its executive director, continues to lead the revolution in women's healthcare.

Summary: Join Chancellor Harvey Perlman and the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women as they recognize an individual or an organization for outstanding efforts to create a climate that encourages women to succeed at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The University Chorale, directed by Dr. Rhonda Fuelberth, will perform at the reception.

Program: Featured speaker John Sorensen is the executive director of the Abbott Sisters Project, an organization that educates the world about the Nebraska-born sisters Grace and Edith Abbott and their contributions to women’s and children’s rights. His speech is titled “Sisters and Companions: Grace and Edith Abbott’s Legacy.”

The Women of Summer: An Unknown Chapter of American Social History Film Screening
Time: 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.

Summary: The Women of Summer is a story of women of different classes and races uniting to pursue the common goals of education and social justice. It is a living demonstration of how the power of education can improve lives.

The Quilted Conscience Film Screening with filmmaker John Sorensen
Time: 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Summary: This 60-minute documentary tells the stories of a group of Sudanese-American girls whose refugee parents have settled in Grand Island, NE. In collaboration with the Abbott Sisters Project and Grand Island Public Schools, nationally-known quiltmaker Peggie Hartwell led the girls in creating a story quilt with the theme “Dreams and Memories.” Sorensen says, “This project is the culmination of the Abbott Sisters Living Legacy work—finding ways to allow the social justice heritage of Grace and Edith Abbott to improve the lives of the children and immigrants of today.”

Summary: A panel discussion that will allow women with a variety of life experiences to share theirs and offer suggestions on the work that may need to be done to achieve true equality.

Edie and Thea: A Very Long Engagement Showing

Summary: The story of two lesbians meeting and falling in love during the still-closeted 1960s; the film follows their 40-plus-year romance with wistful and tender affection.

Summary: Women and sisterhood across the religious spectrum will be discussed. By exploring the similarities and differences between groups we hope to create a more accurate perception of the roles that women play in various religious organizations as well as to demonstrate how religion can act as a force for gender equity.
