LGBTQA Program & Services: Creating Safer Spaces

Different Identities. Different Meanings. Powerful Solutions.
LGBTQA individuals and organizations are made up of diverse individuals with multiple identities. Allies, like LGBTQ and other individuals, may be at different stages in their identity as an ally. In recognizing the diverse and multiple identities that we all have (for example, our primary and secondary identities may involve our sex, gender, religion, culture, abilities, veteran status, area we grew up in), these identities also have varying meanings. Similarly, the safe space and ally cards also have different meanings.
Safe space cards refer to the place and a commitment to equitable access to the space, programs and services provided. Individuals and groups can participate without prejudice or discrimination and all people of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expression will be treated fairly. In providing equitable access, we support the "...recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom and peace in the world..."(from the preamble to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted 12/10/48).
Ally cards are more closely associated with the individual who has the card posted (organizations or departments may also post the card). Posting an ally card and/or joining our Out Ally list indicates a person who, or department that, is pro-LGBTQ and actively committed to diversity and inclusion for all people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expression. For more information about or resources for safe space and/or being an ally, contact LGBTQA Programs & Services or the LGBTQA Resource Center. Cards, buttons, and booklets are available in Student Involvement and the LGBTQA Resource Center. You may also join the ALLY listserv to be informed about ally-related information and programming.
